FAQs:
What styles of dance do you teach?
We specialise in Swing Dance, particularly Lindy Hop and Collegiate Shag. However, we hold taster classes in other styles such as Tap, Balboa and St Louis shag to name a few. Our classes are beginner-friendly, fun, and social, making them perfect for those new to dancing, as well as more experienced dancers looking to refine their skills.
Do I need any dance experience to join?
Not at all! Our classes cater for absolute beginners, and we break everything down step by step. If you’ve never danced before, this is a great place to start.
When and where are the classes held?
Our classes take place every Monday at The Bootmaker, Chelmsford, Essex. The evening begins with a beginner’s class, followed by an intermediate class and then a social dance, where you can practise what you’ve learned and get to know fellow dancers.
Do I need a partner?
No partner is required. We rotate partners during the class, so you’ll have the chance to dance with different people. If you do come with a partner and prefer to stay together, just let us know!
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. For shoes, we recommend ones with a smooth sole to make turning easier. Trainers with too much grip can be tricky for dancing.
How much does it cost?
Classes are £10 and include the beginners and intermediate lessons. The social dance at the end of the night is free.’
Can I just turn up, or do I need to book?
Our classes are drop-in friendly, so you’re welcome to turn up on the night. However, to ensure we don’t get an overcrowded dance floor, the band nights are booked in advance through our website.
Is there parking at the venue?
There are several parking options in Chelmsford near The Bootmaker.
Free parking: Along Moulsham Street near Tesco Express (52 Moulsham St, Chelmsford CM2 0JA) or
Paid Parking: Parkway Public Car Park & Meadows Q Park
What happens at the live band social dances?
Typically, we start with a taster class to get everyone acquainted and to learn something different. Then our swing band will take the stage and perform two sets of live music for everyone to social dance to. We’re a friendly and welcoming community, encouraging leaders and followers alike to invite each other to dance.
How can I stay up to date with events and class info?
The best way to stay in the loop is by following us on Facebook and Instagram, where we post updates about classes, social dances, and special events. We also have a WhatsApp community group for local dancers that attend regularly, where we post updates and recap videos for the classes. Just ask one of the committee to add you to the group!
